 UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE

Does it seem like every time you turn around there is another flashing shield or flag telling you that you have Microsoft Updates waiting on you? Ever just skip them because you know they will take a while to run? Well, you should not skip these updates! They are very important in protecting your computer and keeping it running smoothly.  Here is a list of the types of updates along with an explanation of what they do:

* Security Updates - These updates patch security vulnerabilities that could allow a system to become compromised, especially while surfing the web. Security updates are categorized as Critical, Important, Moderate, Low, or Non-Rated. Critical Updates are the most important updates and should never be ignored. Ignoring these could leave your computer extremely susceptible to hackers and malicious code.

* Critical Updates - These correct any major issue that is found in Microsoft products that could cause software errors or unexpected behaviour.

* Software Updates - Non-critical issues, such as extended features and minor bugs, are addressed using Software Updates.

* Service Packs - Service Packs contain a rollup of all patches to date for a specific piece of software or operating system and usually have additional feature changes. For example, Windows XP Service Pack 3 is the latest service pack for XP and addresses all updates prior to its release as well as a small number of new features.

If you have questions or concerns about any updates that are trying to run on your computer, please feel free to give David a call at 706-856-3282 or email him sales@dsctech.net

Alarm Survellance & Notification System v3,        The Next Generation!
Since the release of the Alarm Surveillance and Notification System ™ (ASN) in 2004, our company has been diligently working to make this system even better.  Instead of releasing new versions, over the years we have continued to develop new modules and fine tune what was in the ASN to get it to our original vision.  With new technology and know how, we have been able to take the ASN to another level of alarm surveillance.  We have added many new features, enhanced original base modules, developed new modules, provided a way for the ASN to handle, not only 16 port ASN Controllers, but 8, 32, and 64 port ASN  Controllers and added a web browser interface, just to mention a few.  When we stood back and looked at what we have now compared to where we started, we decided it was time to release v3.

We are very proud and excited to be able to release this new version of the ASN.  With the v3, we know that th
ose of you that already own this system will be excited about purchasing the upgrade and those of you that do not own the ASN system will see the benefits this alarm system can provide in helping you monitor your network.

This release has many new features that have been requested by our clients over the years. Some of them are as follows:

1.     Softlink:  Allows you to access the ASN through your web browser to see critical, emergency, major, minor or informational alarms.  This interface will allow the user to clear, suspend, reset or acknowledge active alarms.  With this new interactive tool you can stay in touch with your network wherever you are.

2.    SSH and SSL Secure Support: The ASN supports secure communications such as SSL and SSH protocols.

3.    ASN API:  The ASN provides an interface to allow external software to communicate with the ASN.  You would be able to use the ASN to integrate with software such as mapping, inventory or billing.  Through the API the user can enhance almost any type of software with the ASN.

4.    Multi Search on Traps: The v3 allows the user a more precise knowledge of what the SNMP alarm is and where it came from.

The ASN v3 not only has these new features, but also will include some very exciting enhancements to the base modules (included with all ASN systems) and new modules that will be available to purchase. The additional modules that will be introduced with this version are:

1.     Syslog Module:  Will allow the ASN to receive and query syslog messages, for alarm  conditions and act accordingly.

2.    AlarmLink Services Module:  This module will allow the user to offer monitoring services to the existing customer base at a monthly fee.  It can be used to monitor refrigeration within restaurants, retail stores, convenience stores and warehouses.  With this module, a client would buy a dscTech ASN Controller and be able to set up their temperature alarms and notification tables through the internet.  Once the customer has defined their ASN Controller, it will automatically connect to the ASN.  This module is a revenue producer that will help you increase your monthly cash flow.

The enhancements to the base modules are just too numerous to list but one of the key enhancements will be an improved Maintenance Processor Module that will monitor all modules including the main module.  The ASN v3 is also equipped with a mapping interface that will allow the user to see their ASN controllers on a map and the alarm state of each controller at a quick glance.  The user will be able to click on the controller and see the detail of the alarms that are active.

This version has the ability to use one of our newest products, the RLJL SNMP Poller Droid Appliance.  This product will allow you to poll ONT's and set top boxes in a bulk polling session and give you advanced notice of a problem before the customer can call  in.  The ASN v3 is equipped to be used along with the SNMP Poller Droid to monitor a telephone company's cable and fiber network in the field.

We are very excited about this release and look forward to showing the telephone and cable industry what this version of the ASN can do to enhance their ability to monitor their network.  If you have an ASN,  you will definitely want to upgrade.  If you don't, consider purchasing an ASN to monitor your network so you can focus on your business.  Please email me at sales@dsctech.net or call 706-856-3282 for a free quote on an upgrade or ASN purchase.  It's time to stop wondering and always knowing the state of your network.
